My Assistant Principal interview questions 1999

 At the Moment
The Saskatoon Catholic Board of Education was incorporated in 1911 to serve the Catholic community of Saskatoon.
The Division provides educational services to over 14,500 students and is comprised of 33 elementary schools, 5 high schools, 3 alternative schools, 1 associate elementary school and 1 associate high school.

What will Catholic High School Education look like in 5 years? 10 years?
One think kept popping into my mind with this questions.
C        be here (unlike Newfoundland Catholic education will exist.)

I would like to read you something.

C        Education in the Catholic tradition is the lifelong process of seeking and coming to know God in the fullness of creation. The purpose of the Saskatoon Catholic Board of Education is to assist parents and the local Church community in the formation of students in heart, mind, body and spirit. Catholic schools strive to provide an atmosphere of love in which students are inspired by hope in Jesus Christ and have their faith strengthened through the power of the Holy Spirit. I pray that your inward eyes may be illuminated so that you know what is the hope to which God calls you.

C        I was fortunate enough to work on putting together a mission statement for SVA
The purpose of the SVA is to develop interest participation, and excellence in Volleyball through the promotion and provision of quality services for all.

C        Hence I know the effort and time put into developing a mission statement.

C        I also understand that it is not referred to often enough.  But it is a very very important document.

So I would like to use it for the bases of my presentation.

Education in the Catholic tradition is the lifelong process of seeking and coming to know God in the fullness of creation.

Raised in a strong catholic family, attended an all boys catholic high school, taken university religion classes, sponsoring a RCIA candidate, taught religion, married a christian ethics teacher, attend 5 of the 6 growth in faith sessions with this school system, attend church on a weekly basis and I still don=t have the answers.  But I have faith, I am part of a community, in my workplace and in my parish.   This background is not a lot different then a lot of other who teach in our system.
By example we pass on to the students what it means to be catholic, this makes our system different than the public system.  We are on the same road that students are on, we are seeking and coming to know God. Our students are doing that now and will be 5 and 10 years from now.

The purpose of the Saskatoon Catholic Board of Education is to assist parents and the local Church community in the formation of students in heart, mind, body and spirit.

This statement I find very interesting, because it is the most common reason parents have told me, when doing the tasks that are involved with being a director for volleyball canada and president of the sva.  Parents feel we are providing something extra in the catholic system, something that will assist them in the raising of their children.  This is one of the main reasons I feel we are still going to be here 5 and 10 years from now.  Because society is not getting better it is getting scarier and people are going to turn to the schools and church for assistance.  So it is important that our system and church work as a team to form the students.

Catholic schools strive to provide an atmosphere of love in which students are inspired by hope in Jesus Christ and have their faith strengthened through the power of the Holy Spirit.

As I sat at my computer I read this and tried to think of something that I could say that clarify my thoughts on this statement.  One thing kept popping into my head.  Jesus Christ Superstar.

One of the most powerful things I have ever done in this school system is direct the musical JCS with grade 7 and 8.  I am not a director, i am not musically talent.  But the times I have done this musical have always humbled me.  Humbled me because something happens every time, I provide an environment which forces the student to believe in themselves, to believe in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.  And everytime it has been a success in my eyes, because they go farther then they ever thought they could.   Some of them were not catholic, they don=t attend church, but God gives them a little peek at what they are capable of doing with a little faith.
I have done 3 musicals all jcs.

I believe teachers all over our system do this on a daily basis.  Because we as teachers accept Jesus Christ and we accept the Holy Spirit and this allows us to believe in ourselves and in our vocation and hence we can pass it on to our students.  Our school board fosters a growth faith community and for this reason I believe in the future it will only get better.

I pray that your inward eyes may be illuminated so that you know what is the hope to which God calls you.

I believe everything happens for a reason, sometimes we don=t understand the reason.

This is one very weird part of the mission statement.   I like the statement because it is similar to the way I approach most aspects of my life.  God has given myself and other talents, it is a sin to not develop and use ones talents to the hope to which God gave them to you.  This has made me a better person, administrator, teacher, husband, artist, athlete.

It is my hope that the talents God has given me will also make me a good school administrator.

Ok our Catholic High School education is going to look different? How.

Bigger, more and more people are going to send their children to our system because of the extra that we teach.  The extras not only being the christian ethics but the example of teachers faith in God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. I am very comfortable in my faith and feel I am an example of this.
We are going to have the challenge of trying to respect and combine native spirtuality with our teachings.  Something Joe Duquette High School is doing.  My two years teaching in this school opened my eyes to what we are capable of doing.
Canada and Saskatoon is going to experience an influx of immigrants we are going to have to make an effort to understand the different cultures and religions.  Being a military brat, we moved every three years and have seen most of Europe , all of the states and a large portion of the Carribean and Mexico.  This has given me a respect and understanding of different cultures.  I think this will be a strength in our system not a weakness.
Tecnology is going to change the way education is presented.
My experience in computers, has given me some insight into which direction this is heading.  My best guess would be that the focus of education will not be on facts but on how does one obtain the facts and how do you use and evaluate the facts when you have received them.

Cost of education is going to force the re-evaluation of the school day, semester system, the use of facilities.  There are many different models in use in the world and we are going to have to adopt a different system because financially it doesn=t make sense for a school to be empty for the length of time it is empty now.  My administration work with Volleyball Canada and SVA have made it very clear to me that money or lack there of is a catalyst for change.
The system will be a stronger community.
A stronger understanding between highschool and elementary school teachers.  Having taught in both, I understand the challenges of both.  In an ideal world all teachers should teach in both.
High Schools as islands will not be a factor.  The movement of staff between the high schools will eliminate this division.  The moving of staff five times in their career will go a long ways to eliminating this.  It will also make high school teachers aware of the fact they work for a system not a school.
The church and school will work together as a team.  A variety of programs can be used to enhance this teamwork. (Christian ethic points for going to church) Increase in the amount of time a priest spends in the High Schools.

Special needs and handicapt students in the schools will increase.  Two years ago I started to play wheelchair basketball, a definate eye opener to some of the challenges handicapt people face.  I volunteered at a special needs center and presently work at edf with the special needs program.  These people enhance the school experience not hinder it.

Teachers will be more involved in the decision making process in the system.  The movement towards servant leadership will greatly enhance this process.
The role of the Holy Spirit is that of a guide and supporter, not controller or director (John 16:13) I like the role of servant leader because it has been the system that I have been using in the SVA and VC, I don=t know everything and through empowerment it is much easier to reach a common goal.

Lastly I would like to think the schools will still be offering sports but I have a feeling it will all be community based 10 years from now.  Again I think this will be a money based decision.  I have lived in a country, Germany, did my high school there where this model exists, I don=t like it but I think it will happen.   The connection you can make with students throught sports is second to none. So I would not like to see this happen.

I believe God has given me the experience and the talents to assist in making sure the Catholic School System is here 5 or 10 years from now.

Thank You.
