Volleyball Elite Academy

Winning It doesn’t matter who wins or loses as long as the kids have fun. —Said no experienced coach ever THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE IN TODAY believes the best way to raise children is to create a noncompetitive safe environment. In my humble opinion, this is a pile of crap. As a teacher, parent, coach, and a member of this messed up society, this creates entitled people who believe they should be given everything they need in life, even if they did not earn it. Why is this such a bad thing? My answer to that is that one does not know the value of something if it is just given. Most of the woes of today’s society can be contributed to people’s thoughts that they are entitled to something. In sports, every child makes the teams, or in tournaments every child gets a ribbon for just being there. What are we teaching them? The effort is not necessary, everyone gets the same reward. We are teaching them it is not necessary to earn things. Every talent athlete, or elite athlete have been given the genetics to excel and they have put in the time and effort to learn the necessary skills and apply them correctly in the organized sport. A coach’s mission if they choose to accept it is provide the necessary information to interested athletes and motivate them to put the effort to achieve. When a child joins a team which has a schedule of games, opponents, referees, coaches it is time to allow the teams to win or lose. This will not harm the athletes, this is harmful to parents who want to protect the children and are are fooling themselves that the children have no idea who won or lost the game just because they did not keep score and everyone got the same ribbon or medal. Society needs to look at two different types of sports, organized sports and non-organized sports. Parents who do not think winning is important need to take their child to a park and start an unorganized game. This is the environment where winning is not important. The moment a coach, schedule and referee is involved winning is important and even more important than winning is failing. To fail is to learn. I have coached teams that won every game they played, they never lost. The overall growth of that team was no where close to a team that loses and has to work to figure out why they did not win. Winning is important, winning is not a bad word, winning at all cost and it is the only thing is bad. The journey needed to win is what is most important. After all of that if you don`t win it really does not matter because of what was learned along the way. Willing is fun …Sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied is the point. The point is to always try to better. Winners never quit and quitters never win.
